Michael Marriott - The World of Roses

Michael Marriott - The World of Roses

In the tranquil world of gardens where every leaf, petal, and stem holds a story, there exists a maestro whose hands orchestrate the symphony of nature with finesse and passion. Meet Michael Marriott.

What sets Michael apart is not just his technical expertise, but his intuitive understanding of roses and their needs. He approaches gardening as an art form, carefully selecting each rose to create his very well known romantic beds whether purely roses or mixed in with perennials. His beds are not mere collections of plants but living narratives that unfold with every season, weaving a tale of growth, change, and renewal. Some of the public gardens Michael has worked include, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Queen Mary’s Rose Garden in Regent’s Park, Hampton Court Palace and many many more.

He was a valued part David Austin Roses for 35 years being the source of knowledge for everything related to roses. One could argue that because of Michael English Roses are popular in many countries around the world and are a corner stone of country gardens. Michael still fosters a deep passion and unrivalled knowledge for roses and a lot of his enthusiasm is behind the the variety of fragrances that roses can produce. (Michael has in face worked along side Robert Calkin himself AKA the "rose nose")

As an advocate of practical gardening techniques and organic methods for rose gardeners, Michael is regularly called upon to conduct workshops, give lectures and write articles for publications of varying levels of expertise in many different countries. His clients are predominantly located in the United States, United Kingdom and EU, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea.

His own gardens have always been run on organic principles (which is an ever growing matter for the gardening world), selecting only the healthiest varieties of roses and using other plants to attract insects to increase the biodiversity of the garden backed up with soil management all resulting in a blooming and healthy garden.

Michael is also a chair man of the Historic Roses Group and you can find them on Instagram using their tag, @historic_roses_group. He is also vice president of Plant heritage  where you can also find some extra information on how to look after your garden and the importance of environmental impact, last but defiantly not least, Michael also has his own Instagram!
